2010 Give Kids A Smile

Dentist Information

“Give Kids a Smile” is currently helping children in the communities of Allen, Denton, Frisco, Flower Mound, Lewisville, McKinney, Prosper, and Plano.

We hope to provide needed dental care to over 150 underserved children who have demonstrated an inability to receive care through the traditional private practice system.  To accomplish this we need you, the NTDS member-doctors, to step up and volunteer your services!  Current membership in our dental society is 400 and growing.  The talents and skills of all our member-doctors, including specialists, are critical to the success of GKAS in 2010.

General dentists are being asked to treat 4-8 patients in their offices during the month of February, 2010 (dependent on availability of needed volunteers).  Children will be selected by their school nurses according to dental need.  All qualified children will have been carefully screened.  Their parents will be required to fill out patient registration forms and releases for treatment prior to assignment to a local volunteer doctor.

The GKAS Committee will create a patient chart for each patient, and have them distributed to your office.  It is the responsibility of the volunteer doctor to contact the parents of each assigned GKAS patient directly to schedule an appointment for treatment.

We are asking general dentists to serve as primary caregivers, and are recruiting specialists to be available for specialty care when needed.  General dentists will make recommendation back to the GKAS Committee for those children with additional needs.  They will then be assigned to volunteer-specialists.  In the event that a GKAS patient misses or is late for an appointment, the volunteer doctor may use his/her discretion regarding re-appointment.  It is ultimately the parents’ responsibility to keep the appointment and be on-time.

The children in need of care will be divided into 3 different levels (some will need, prophy, fluoride, and xrays). The three levels are:

Level 1 - Comprehensive Care-  including all restorative treatment, ie..extractions, stainless steel crowns, pulpotomies, fillings, and band and loop space maintainers.

For those dentists that choose to participate at the highest care level, ( Care Level 1) we desire to achieve long term comprehensive care for our kids, so we can keep them smiling for a lifetime. This long term care would include routine hygiene recall, education to aid in the understanding of their dental condition.

Level 2 - Multiple Quadrant Care- only fillings in multiple quadrants, permanent and primary teeth, but none of the other treatment in Level 1 Comprehensive Care.

Level 3 - Single Quadrant Care- only fillings in one quadrant, permanent and primary teeth.

The children that would fall in one of the three levels will have already been seen at one or the Hygiene schools for prophy, fluoride, and xrays and will need the additional care.

The timetable for all in-office primary care to be rendered is from February 1 through March 31, 2010.  It is then hoped that all remaining specialty care be completed by April 15, 2010.  Upon completion of a child’s treatment, all charts are to be collected by the GKAS Committee for safekeeping. Each dentist will be asked to keep track of the total amount of free dental care provided to each patient by filling out a "Completed Treatment Totals" form. These forms will be necessary to tabulate the results to share our grand total with the ADA, local legislators and other policymakers.

If for any reason you are unable to volunteer your services to this worthy cause, please consider making a financial contribution to GKAS 2010.  All donations will go to defraying the costs of putting on this event and assist in providing needed materials for use by our volunteer doctors.

To sign up and volunteer your services or learn more about how you can get involved, contact Lisa McLerran at 469-855-9965.   Email inquiries may be directed to ntds4@yahoo.com.
